She saw leaders who looked like her
Before SDA, Sherlyn Ramos knew she wanted to go to college but not where, or what to study. She already liked getting involved in her community. She just didn’t know who to talk to yet.
SDA’s trainings and workshops built her confidence talking with leaders, and showed her there were leaders who looked like her in positions of power in South Carolina. Hispanic Alliance also helped fund a summer program at SCAD, the Savannah College of Art and Design. A semester of classes there convinced her she belonged in college.
Today Sherlyn studies biological sciences at Clemson University, with minors in Spanish and business administration. She plans to work in biotech before medical school. She has mentored for SDA, and she still mentors younger students.
