Ashley Garcia

Ashley found SDA through a Lunch + Learn and applied alongside her friends. A public speaking class gave her the confidence to tell her story to colleges and employers.

Public speaking was the first thing that changed

Before SDA, Ashley Garcia had toured only one college. She knew she would go to college. She didn’t know how yet.

She heard about SDA at a Lunch + Learn and applied that September with her friends. The first change was public speaking. SDA’s class gave her the confidence to advocate for herself with employers and college admissions, and to explain how her story brought her where she is. SDA’s scholarship database helped her work out how to pay for school.

When she filmed this video, she was about to start a summer internship with United Way in Greenville, along with work at Furman University. She plans to graduate in international business.

“You can achieve your dreams, even if it may look hard or difficult, or you may not know what life is gonna bring you in the next five years. Just keep doing it one step at a time, and eventually you’ll get there.”
