FUNCTION

Under direct supervision of the Communications Manager, this position:

  • Is responsible for planning, executing and evaluating a comprehensive marketing and community relations program for the Library System.
  • Ensures that multiple communication formats are effectively utilized to optimize accurate and timely information flow to staff and the public about the Library System’s activities and programs.
  • Creates quality, engaging content using the Library System’s digital and print communications channels, including email, social media, the website, Library Now magazine, and other print pieces.
  • Works closely with the Communications Team to promote and publicize library events, programs, and services to a broad audience.
  • Performs work in accord with the Library System’s vision and mission, using good judgement and ethical behavior in the application of policies and established procedures.

 

MINIMUM TRAINING & EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, English, or related field and submission of portfolio with writing samples that may include social media posts and/or feature stories.
  • At least two years’ experience in a similar communications role.
  • One to three years related experience in social media management, preferably for a brand or organization.
  • Experience shooting photos and producing videos for social media.
  • Other combinations of experience, education, and training that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

Preferred:

  • Experience writing feature stories.

Public Relations/Media Relations:

  • Directs media relations strategies for the Library System including attention to media platforms serving diverse communities. (E)
  • Consults with the Executive Director on official statements, strategies, and plans with regard to decisions and actions that may be covered by local press. (E)
  • Coordinates with the Executive Director to identify appropriate spokespersons for delivering the Library System’s message to internal and external publics. (E)
  • Develops positive working relationships with media; maintains reports of media coverage. (E)
  • Plans and directs media events with the Executive Director. (E)
  • Develops new contacts and outlets for promotion. (E)
  • Drafts press releases. (E)
  • Distributes press releases approved by Executive Director to relevant media outlets. (E)
  • Compiles mailing list of media contacts. (E)
  • Works with Administration and the Volunteer Coordinator to maintain the Event Guide Mailing list and Mailchimp contacts. (E)

 

Social Media/Marketing

  • Manages the Library System’s social media accounts and produces and schedules original content, including photos and video, which play to the audiences of each platform; maintains and encourages positive interactions with the public on these accounts. (E)
  • Communicates in a professional but uniquely social media “voice” for the Library System, answering questions and responding to comments and direct messages as needed. (E)
  • Drafts marketing notifications for Library System app in consultation with the Communications Manager. (E)

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS/ABILITIES & CHARACTERISTICS

Knowledge:

  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of Facebook, X (Twitter), Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok and their audiences.
  • Strong knowledge of social media and digital marketing trends.
  • Knowledge of marketing practices and principles.
  • Knowledge of public relations practices, principles, and ethics.
  • Familiarity with social media scheduling tools such as Sprout Social, Hootsuite, Buffer, Meta Business Suite, etc.
