June is LGBTQI+ Pride Month!

Show your support, celebrate with your community

Pride Month, which pays tribute to the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan, is celebrated in June. You may have seen rainbow flags flying in the Upstate, or events to attend on social media which celebrate the impact lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex individuals have had on our culture & that honor the difficulties they still encounter daily.

As advocates for an inclusive South Carolina, we proudly celebrate our friends in the LGBTQI+ community. Please join us by volunteering, attending events or parties, or becoming an ally/advocate. Here is a list of some of our local organizations hosting events and sharing resources during the month of June and beyond:

Heal Board 2.0

Currently seeking candidates to serve our community!

Join a Board of Greenville neighbors who want to make our community a healthier and safer place for us all.

The Board will inform the work that LiveWell Greenville, Hispanic Alliance, REEM GVL, and other organizations develop to advance changes related to health equity and justice.

SPOTLIGHT PRESENTER | Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Upstate
Serve our youth, serve our community

Our Spotlight presenter last Wednesday was Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Upstate. For more than 50 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Upstate has been igniting, inspiring, and defending the potential of youth in the Upstate.

Mentors are needed!

Currently, the organization has over one hundred youth in the Upstate who are in need of mentor support from our community, and male mentors are their number one need at the moment! To Become a Mentor or for more information, please email Nadia Granger at grangern@bbbsupstate.com 

Interpreting in Education Settings
Registration for the Interpreting in Education Settings course is now open. This 5.0 CEU, 50-hour Continuing Education program in Professional Spanish Interpreting in Educational Settings is designed for teachers, aides, counselors, and other educators working in K-12 schools, as well as college and adult education providers and bilingual community members who wish to develop professional interpreting skills to apply in educational settings. The summer course will run through July 3 – July 31, 2023.
No Cost Tuition at Piedmont Technical College!

Piedmont Technical College is extending its No-Cost Option for tuition through the Fall 2023 semester! Act Now! This program will end after the fall semester so act while you can!

Greater Good Greenville | Accounting Basics for Nonprofits
Greater Good Greenville is hosting a workshop: Accounting Basics for Nonprofits on August 28th at NEXT Innovation Center. Robyn Campbell with Elliott Davis will join us to answer your accounting 101 questions. All leaders are welcome, but this is especially targeted at smaller organizations whose staff or volunteer leaders juggle accounting along with many other duties.
Seamless Summer Food Service Program
Greenville County Schools will be participating in the Seamless Summer Food Service Program during the months of June, July and August. Nutritionally-balanced meals will be provided to all children. All children 18 years old and younger are eligible for meals at no charge. All meals must be consumed on-site.
Health and Wellness Fair

Phillis Wheatley Community Center is hosting a Health and Wellness Fair and School Supply Giveaway on July 22nd from 10 AM – 1 PM at their lower campus at 35 Greenacre Road, Greenville, SC 29607. The fair will be giving out free school supplies and will have music and food.

TPS Update

Temporary Protected Status Designations for El Salvador, Honduras, Nepal and Nicaragua reinstated and is now extended for 18 months.

Submit a Project Proposal for Leadership Greenville!

The Greenville Chamber’s flagship leadership development program, Leadership Greenville, is now accepting project proposals for its historic 50th class! Leadership Greenville service project proposals are open for non-profit organizations in the Greenville community. The deadline to submit your proposal is June 30th.

The United Way of Laurens County is Looking for YOU!

The United Way of Laurens County is in need of new members who work/live in Laurens County, particularly someone who identifies as Hispanic and is engaged in their community to help identify the Hispanic population in Laurens County and prioritize their needs. Please email Jervelle Fort if you would like to participate.

Join the Well Walkers at Bon Secours Wellness Arena

The Well Walkers program is a free walking program hosted at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena most Tuesdays and Thursdays. Each lap around the concourse is ¼ mile and strollers are welcome. Often representatives from St. Francis Sports Medicine and other service lines are on hand for you to ask questions about your health and wellness! Free parking is available in the VIP lot off of Church Street.
