Research Projects

Learning from our Community to Ignite Actionable Change

In 2023, the Hispanic Alliance continued research initiatives focused on learning from our community to drive actionable change. Through surveys, interviews, and community engagement, we delved into the nuanced experiences, challenges, and aspirations of the Hispanic population in South Carolina. This comprehensive approach aimed to not only understand the diverse needs of our community but also to identify strategic opportunities for impactful interventions. These research collaborations serve as a powerful tool for informed decision-making, enabling the Hispanic Alliance to tailor its programs, advocacy efforts, and support services to address the specific, evolving needs of individuals and families. By prioritizing community input, we are fostering a culture of responsiveness, inclusivity, and empowerment within the Hispanic Alliance and the broader Hispanic community across the Palmetto State.

A collaborative effort involving Bon Secours St. Francis Health System, Clemson University, Piedmont Health Foundation, and the Hispanic Alliance, this study focused on mental health, healthcare-seeking behaviors, and perceptions of culturally competent care within this demographic. By shedding light on these issues, the research aimed to address the underrepresentation of Hispanic residents in broader equity and health assessments in Greenville County, ultimately striving to pave the way for more inclusive and effective healthcare initiatives.

Strategic Partnership for inclusive Arts & Culture

As part of a strategic partnership between the South Carolina Arts Commission and the Hispanic Alliance, we completed a statewide Hispanic Arts and Culture Assessment. Sixty-three artists and 12 arts organizations were surveyed and initial findings suggest Hispanic artists significantly lack access to education, career development, studio space, and most importantly funding. Full results and a comprehensive report will be available in the Summer of 2024.

A report authored by Clemson University researchers that explores the economic impact of allowing lawfully present workers to receive occupational and professional licenses in various sectors was unveiled to the public on March 25 in Greenville. Co-hosted by Hispanic Alliance and Ten at the Top, the Allied4Work event also included an overview of S.C. House Bill 3288 and a panel discussion on the opportunities and challenges for the lawfully present workforce in South Carolina.

Health Equity Action Leadership Board

The Health Equity Action Leadership Board is an inclusive group of multicultural leaders who partner with the community to advocate for quality care and equitable health outcomes for all. This board strives to ensure that all of the advocacy efforts and policy changes proposed by the Equity in Public Health Initiative, a collaborative work between LiveWell Greenville, Hispanic Alliance, The Racial Equity and Economic Mobility (REEM) which is grounded in the experiences of community members closest to the problems we are trying to solve.

South Carolina Hispanic Common Agenda

South Carolina has seen remarkable growth in its Hispanic/Latino population over the past decade. However, this growth has been accompanied by significant gaps in resources available for educational and professional opportunities to empower the Hispanic community. Legislative changes are essential to tackle systemic barriers, and the Hispanic Alliance is spearheading this statewide effort to identify and reduce legislative obstacles that hinder Hispanic individuals’ access to prosperity.
