Position: Web Designer, Communications, Hughes Main Library | Pay: $23.52 per hour, plus benefits
Position works 37.5 hours per week Annual salary: approximately $45,855 |

FUNCTION
Under direct supervision of the Communications Manager, this position:
- Creates the overall layout and aesthetics for GCLS websites and web applications. Creates and maintains web design standards and style guides.
- Conducts user research and uses analytics data to inform designs.
- Directly supports the Communications Manager and works closely with Web Developers and Graphic Designer to implement and achieve the Library System’s goals.
- Embodies the Library System’s code of service by creating an atmosphere where customers and coworkers feel invited, informed, impressed and inspired.
- Performs work in accord with the Library System’s vision and mission, using good judgment in the application of policies and established procedures.
MINIMUM TRAINING & EXPERIENCE
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in web design, graphic design, or related field.
- Some experience in web design or related field.
- Google Analytics certification.
- Submission of design portfolio URL.
- Other combinations of experience and education may be considered.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

- Create wireframes, mockups, and prototypes for website and app using Figma, Adobe XD, or other design tool. (E)
- Ensures websites and applications are ADA compliant and adhere to W3 web standards. (E)
- Works with Communications Manager and Web Developers to develop web style guide. (E)
- Responsible for hand-off of final web designs, graphics, and images to the Web Developers. (E)
- Responsible for setup and customization of reading programs website. (E)
- Stays up-to-date with latest industry standards and trends regarding user interface and interaction design, web design and user experience design. (E)
- Applies brand standards to all web designs and assists the Communications Manager in the development of branding that translates into a dynamic web experience for the user. (E)
- Works with the web team to conduct user research including user testing, surveys, and personas. (E)
- Uses Google analytics data to inform web designs. (E)
- Creates user interface graphics, icons, and components. (E)
- Prepares responsive SVG images for use on website. (E)
- Creates responsive templates for desktop, tablets, and mobile devices using a mobile-first approach. (E)
- Responsible for customizing third-party websites and ensuring brand standards are maintained. (E)
- Assists in design of internal StaffWeb interface and internal web forms as requested. (E)
- Ensures safe work methods are followed to prevent injury (E).
- Works a schedule that meets the needs of the unit (E).
- Maintains regular and reliable attendance and remains compliant with the Library System’s Attendance Guidelines. (E)
- Performs other associated or required duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS/ABILITIES & CHARACTERISTICS
(Testing of computer skills may be part of the interview process for this position.)
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of web and graphic design principles including visual hierarchy, color, typography, navigation, contrast, balance, and white space in creative processes.
- Knowledge of responsive design strategies and SVG imagery.
- Proficiency in Figma, Adobe XD, or other web design tools.
- Knowledge of Bootstrap 5 and design systems such as Material Design.
- Knowledge of user research methods such as usability testing, personas, surveys, and analytics.
- Knowledge of user experience best practices and a user-centered design approach.
Skills/Abilities:
- Strong design skills and the ability to produce compelling materials in a timely fashion.
- Ability to create web design independently and manage projects from conception to completion.
- Ability to articulate design and layout to co-workers.
- Experience using CSS and HTML.
- Experience preparing images and video for the web using Adobe tools or other apps.
- Ability to extract data from Google Analytics to inform web design decisions.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, perform tedious or exacting work and engage with others as part of a team.
- Ability to communicate concepts, general information, and task-oriented information in oral, written, and electronic forms.
Characteristics:
- Must be able to work in a noisy/distracting environment with time pressures and frequent change of tasks.
- Customer service oriented.
- Arrives on time, works hours as scheduled and maintains a good attendance record.
