FUNCTION

Under direct supervision of the Security Supervisor, the person in this position:

  • Performs a variety of security duties, some of a specialized nature, for the purpose of promoting safety and security for Library System premises, property, patrons and staff.
  • Serves as the person in charge of the unit’s day to day operations, maintaining efficient operations by providing support and guidance to staff.
  • Performs work under general supervision, in accord with the Library System’s vision and mission, using good judgment in the application of policies and established procedures.

 

MINIMUM TRAINING & EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • High school diploma or high school equivalency certificate (GED).
  • Three to five years’ experience related to security, emergency preparedness, safety and/or law enforcement duties.
  • Recent experience at the intermediate level with Microsoft Word and Excel, and experience using various Internet browsers, email and presentation software programs.
  • Other combinations of experience, education and training that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

Preferred:

  • Two years of college-level work (preferably in Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Security, or related field) from an accredited college or university.
  • Supervisory or leadership experience.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Receiving and responding to calls from the Library System after departure or on the weekend and be on call in the absence of the Security Supervisor.
  • Under the County’s Substance Abuse Policy, the Library has designated this position as a safety sensitive position which requires pre-employment drug testing on applicants and random drug and alcohol testing on employees.

  • Acts as a Team Leader, i.e. serves as the responsible party for the operation of the Security unit as designated by supervisor. (E)
  • Directs, assigns, and coordinates duties of other Security staff, and provides coaching and training as needed. (E)

  • Responds to notification from Main Library’s card access system of unauthorized entry into stairwells, restricted access and/or staff only areas and takes appropriate action. (E)
  • Monitors, reviews and retrieves stored data and images from CCTV system. (E)
  • Maintains safety related inventory for the branches and Main Library. (E)
  • Maintains Security related equipment inventory and ensures items are returned and accounted for. (E)
  • Responds to safety and security emergencies on a 24-hour basis for the library system upon notification as requested by the Security Supervisor. (E)
  • Maintains and updates appropriate security reports, records and activity logs. (E)
  • Assists in tracking incident reports generated for repeat offenders. (E)
  • Provides security for branch locations and special events.
  • Conducts safety and security inspections of all library locations as assigned and notifies the Facilities Maintenance Manager of any areas of facilities and grounds that need attention. (E)
  • Removes litter, debris and other discarded items from buildings, parking lots and grounds as part of patrol duties. (E)
  • Reviews and provides feedback for security related policies and procedures.
  • Maintains relationships with various community agencies, i.e. local law enforcement, homeless shelters, etc.
  • Maintains first aid and spill cleaning supplies.
  • Obtains and maintains American Red Cross Instructor certification in First Aid and CPR and Preventing Disease Transmission, as assigned.
  • Trains library staff in emergency procedures, use of fire extinguishers and first aid.
  • Responsible for the setup and breakdown of meeting rooms at Main Library (E).

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS/ABILITIES & CHARACTERISTICS

Knowledge:
